On 10th of October The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) marks its 14th anniversary since its foundation.

Totally KNAB Chancellory has received and registered more than 18 512 applications and complains.

To realize one of it’s main functions – to control the prevention of conflict of interest in the activities of public officials and compliance of prohibitions and restrictions set to them, KNAB has taken more than 1972 decisions of violations of the law and in administrative cases and public officials were fined in total amount of 95 835 EUR.

In the area of combating corruption KNAB has sent for criminal prodsecution 298 criminal cases against 673 persons.

In the frame of function of monitoring financing of political parties, KNAB has ensured inspection of the legitimacy of donations to political parties in total amount of 34,7 millions EUR, as well as the use of public funding to political parties in nine election campaigns. For violation of the party financing and pre-election campaign rules KNAB has imposed fines in total amount 105 267 EUR.

The Bureau has actively involved in the process of improvement of the legal framework – many regulations have been elaborated regarding the prevention of conflict of interests, transparency of lobbying, lease of the state and municipalities’ property, income control of natural persons, as well as criminal liability for corruptive crimes and legal protection for officials who report corruptive crimes, as well as legal framework of political party financing and pre-electing campaigning. Additionally several important amendments have been approved related to Latvia’s membership in international organisations and approval of international conventions, as one of the most essential can be mentioned the participation of KNAB in the process of joining Latvia to The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The Bureau is an independent public administration institution under the supervision of the Cabinet of Ministers. Its aim is to fight corruption in Latvia in a coordinated and comprehensive way through prevention, investigation and education. The Bureau was established in October 2002 and is fully operation since February 2003.
