The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has forwarded materials of the criminal proceedings initiated in September 2006 to the Prosecutor's General Office suggesting to bring criminal charges against the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Director of the Riga State Technical College for accepting a 80 000 lats bribe by using intermediary. Within the framework of this criminal process KNAB investigator asks to bring criminal charges against four persons.

During the pretrial investigation it was detected that the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Education, who at that same time was also the acting State Secretary, together with the Director of the Riga State Technical College planned and coordinated their activities with the purpose to ask and receive 80 000 lats bribe by using intermediary.

It was found that the bribe was asked from a representative of a company to ensure signing of a settlement on behalf of both - the Ministry and the College - in a civil case related to immovable property.

The investigator of KNAB considers that evidence collected during the pretrial investigation is sufficient and suggests to start criminal prosecution against the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Director of the Riga State Technical College for accepting a bribe under the Article 320 (3) of the Criminal Law, against lawyer of the College for intermediary and supporting bribery, as well as against one private person - for supporting bribery.

Security measure not related to deprivation of liberty has been applied to all suspects.
