On 10th of October KNAB officials arrested two judges on suspicion of accepting a bribe. According to the Law on Judicial Power the Prosecutor General Jānis Maizītis initiated criminal proceedings on these two above mentioned bribery facts. An imprisonment was imposed to both judges as a security measure on 12 October, 2006.
In a course of one of the pre-trial investigations on bribery three more persons were recognized as suspects and one of them is a public official. The materials of a criminal case indicate numerous separate bribes giving occasions. The gathered evidences give a ground to consider that a judge had to make a decision in civil cases in the interests of a bribe giver.
KNAB investigator has recognized one sworn bailiff as a suspect in committing a crime provided for in the Criminal Law of Latvia, Article 323 (2), i.e. giving of bribes in aggravating circumstances. The rest two persons were recognized as suspects in committing a crime provided for in the Criminal Law of Latvia, Article 323 (1) - giving of bribes.
As a security measure an imprisonment was applied to a sworn bailiff and for other two suspects KNAB investigator applied a security measure other than deprivation of liberty.
