On 12 January 2007 head of a division of the Central Criminal Police Department of the State Police was detained by the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) on charges of misappropriating a part of a bribe.

Evidence gathered in the criminal proceedings suggests that the detained head of division of the Central Criminal Police Department asked to give a bribe in the amount of 35 000 lats for allegedly passing it over to a KNAB officer. He was detained after receiving a part of the bribe in the amount of 20 000 lats.

The bribe was asked in order to obtain the change of the security measure in criminal proceedings currently within the prosecution office.

KNAB investigator has started criminal proceedings in relation to misappropriation of bribe, Article 321(2) of the Criminal Law. The detained head of division of the Central Criminal Police Department is declared suspect in relation to Article 318 (2) on misuse of office and Article 321 (2) on misappropriation of bribe of the Criminal Law.

On 14 January 2007 the Latgale district court ordered to use arrest as security measure for the suspect.
